(What A) Comeback
7" vinyl & promo CD, Grid Records, GDR1, 2004

1. (What A) Comeback
2. Bravado

"Nothing hurts quite like a well-aimed stinging hook line and Flannelmouth know this. Simply stunning stuff."
- Mark, Losing Today Magazine

"I have one major problem with Flannelmouth - their lack of output. This Finnish band should not remain a secret, as they put their own spin on the romantic pop sounds once purveyed by Gene, The Smiths and James. Tuomo Kuusi has a tenor voice that swoops and glides, and it is an ideal vehicle for emotional songs. The A-side is a nice pulsing jangle rocker, superbly produced. While Ari Virtanen plays an insistent rhythm part, lead guitarist Mikko Kapanen plays a variety of nifty fills. Meanwhile, Antti Lonnblad (bass) and Markus Koskinen (drums) drive things forward. Kuusi sings Virtanen's somewhat humorous lyrics, as the protagonist is confident he will get back together with his girl, though he seems a tad too optimistic. The b-side, "Bravado", is a bit more muscular and lyrically more realistic, with Kuusi exclaiming "I'm failing tonight." On this song, you can really appreciate the guitar work, with the rhythm in one speaker, and the leads in the other. The instrumental break takes this song up one more gear. If it were me, this would be the lead track, no offense to "(What a) Comeback." The band has finally finished a full length album, which I can't wait for it. Even though they are Finnish, I think they are true keepers of the flame of the '80s British indie rock sound."
- Mike Bennett, fufkin.com

"...the glistening, sparkling quality... ...marks Flannelmouth as true alt.indie masters. Real Peel potential and enough power in the bass to draw you into it's charming but sharp toothed sounds. Ones to watch."
- JR / Manchester Music.co.uk

"Flannelmouth have hit a scene where their warm pop rock sounds just might cut the mustard. Nice and fresh just like the weather in Finland, expect all hands to be on deck for their debut, which will see a release later this year. "
- Simon / www.anemicmagazine.com (Australia)

"Sinkun kappaleista etenkin kakkosraita Bravadon kerto tarttuu korvaan. Nautinnollista kuultavaa on myös (What A) Comeback *kappaleen pienieleinen herkistely. Saapa nähdä millaiseen sukseeseen yhtyeen herkkä poppis riittää Suomessa, vai pongahtaako bändi julkisuuteen esimerkiksi brittilehdistön kautta."
- Ilkka Valpasvuo, desibeli.net

"This new single - the debut release on the Finnish Grid label - is interesting, but not the Big One that I have a suspicion that they're capable of."
- Nik Moore / Playlouder.com

"Not a lot is expected from Finland in North America, but if Flannelmouth have anything to prove, it's that solid strumming, falsetto vocals and rock with a kick ass Finnish accent is set to warm up more than the room across the world's stage. Tuomo Kuusi's rich, borderless vocals need to be heard outside of Europe and in a club nearest you."
- LW, Soulshine.ca

"Jos ei nyt ihan järisyttävä, niin erittäin miellyttävän kuuloinen comeback ainakin. Helsinkiläinen pitkänlinjan kulkija on pop-oppikoulunsa läpäissyt. 90-luvun kaveribändit ympäriltä ovat kuukahtaneet yksi kerrallaan matkalle, mutta Flannelmouth jaksaa jatkaa hienostuneen brittipopin parhaiden perinteiden ylläpitämistä. Tuomo Kuusen laulu on vahvaa ja koskettavaa. Jousia on osattu käyttää klassisen popin parhaiden perinteiden mukaisesti sovituksen tukena, ei sen perustana. Olisiko meillä tässä Suomen Coldplay?"
- Mikko Aaltonen, Rumba 13+14/04

"The new seven inch single by Flannelmouth is the first release by Grid records. And what an excellent start it is. Flannelmouth won my heart with the previous I've Seen Nothing Yet -ep. Especially the first track Collection was just stunning. Now after a small change in the line-up, Flannelmouth is back with this wonderful effort. Especially the a-side (What a) comeback is a definite "five heart" song on my scale. If it's not the best song by Flannelmouth ever than it's at least a tie with the already mentioned Collection. Wonderful guitars and just lovely vocal melody. Perhaps a bit more tender and softer than the average Flannelmouth song and that works for me perfectly. One of those should-be hits. B-side "Bravado" isn't equally stunning, but a really good song nevertheless. Flannelmouth's convincingly emotional and warm pop music is easily able to sneak into my heart and Tuomo's passionate vocals are ..once again.. absolutely marvellous. We'll keep waiting impatiently for the upcoming debut album (due to be released later in the year)."
- Vesa Lautamäki, onechord.net

"So by comparing Flannelmouth with their European neighbors, all I'm doing is pointing out their attention to detail and their talent for writing hypnotic melodies. Mix this music with a unique sounding vocalist that can hit the high and low notes and add some lyrics that are far better than I'd expect to come from a band with an odd name like Flannelmouth, and you've got a pretty sweet record. Hopefully their new album will be full of tracks this as good as these."
