“Tätä on kannattanut odottaa yli viisi vuotta… The Heart Cannot Hold nimittäin päättää Flannelmouthin pitkän hiljaiselon järisyttävällä tavalla. The Heart Cannot Hold liikkuu todellakin tummissa maisemissa, mutta pimeästä onnistutaan löytämään runsaasti sävyjä. Albumin kymmenen kappaletta todistavat joukkion tyylitajua ammentaa menneestä ja limittää nykyiseen. Juuri tätä pop parhaillaan tuottaa, hurmioituneen ihmettelyn kuplaa.” *****
- Antti Hurskainen, desibeli.net [koko arvostelu]

“Vaikka The Heart Cannot Hold on kymmenvuotiaalta helsinkiläisyhtyeeltä vasta toinen levy, sen rohkeassa sovituksellisessa otteessa ja luovissa ratkaisuissa kuuluu, ettei tässä olla untuvikkoja.” 4/5 stars.
-Jean Ramsay, Rumba

“Johdonmukaisen linjakas The Heart Cannot Hold on huolella kypsytelty paketti. Tämä kuuluu sen maalaamissa uljaissa kaarissa ja kaihoisissa tunnelmissa, joita ei kuitenkaan roiskita turhaan tuhlaillen vaan siksi, kun on tarvis. Sävellykset ovat uljaita ja soitto toimii. Kyllä, odotuksen arvoinen levy.” 8/10 points.
-Tuomas Tiainen, Sue

“Helsinkiläinen indierockryhmä on julkaissut vihdoin kakkosalbuminsa – debyytistä ehti kulua lähes kuusi vuotta (korjaus: viisi). Levy on mainio sekoitus 80-luvun Manchester-poppia ja rujompaa Interpol-tyyppistä vetoa. Tässä on juuri Flanarin vahvuus: biisi eivät ole liian samankaltaisia, mutta tyylikirjo ei myöskään hajoa.” 4/5 stars.

“By now, word of yet another great band from Scandinavia ought to come as a surprise to exactly no one. Flannelmouth, however, challenges the nuances of what has become a contemporary
music cliché with a richly dramatic, melodic style more akin to the early ’90s Madchester scene than the typically gritty, garagey Baltic-band milieu… …Flannelmouth carves out its own distinct sonic fjord and strikes a keen balance between reverent, romantic pop and sharp, complex radio-ready rock.”

- Chuck Molgat, Exclaim!, www.exclaim.ca

“Whether it’s the frigid goth rock of the opening track, “The Right Words,” the wonderfully melancholic “Lovers Lament,” or the anthemic romance of “Street Level,” Flannelmouth have it figured out. Rain Inside is top-notch pop: the chords structures are impeccable, the vocal stylings are such that would make the Mozz himself green, and the production is just so fresh and clean; a kind of freshness only seen on other scandi-releases.”

- Jared L., We Love Musique, www.welovemusique.com

“The band is obviously a crew of inspired musicians that enjoy mixing melodies, driving guitars, and bass lines into their songs with fabulous results … a good listen for anyone who enjoys the frenetic, high-energy rock styles of Brit-pop, but isn’t terribly interested in lightweight imitations.”

History

Flannelmouth are an institution, if only in the tiny circles of English-language indie in Helsinki, Finland. Active since 1997, the band celebrate their 15th anniversary in 2012 quietly working on a third album to be released next year. Here’s a few words on what has happened so far.

A classic five-piece guitar band: bass, drums, two guitars and a singer. That was the concept from the very start, as Flannelmouth first crawled ashore from the dark depths of the icy Baltic Sea in the late nineties. Three of the original members still remain from the very start: Ari Virtanen on rhythm guitar, Tuomo Kuusi on vocals, Antti Lönnblad on bass. Other members have come and gone; the Fellowship of Former Flannelmouth Members is now probably about twenty strong.

There’s little to be said about the early years of Flannelmouth. Lots of drive, lots of fun, lots of nights spent driving home from shows played to maybe 10 people, 500 km from home. The stuff of being young, the stuff of learning how to write better songs. Somewhere along the way the band became more serious about its music. In early 2002, the band recorded yet another self-financed four song EP. Titled I’ve Seen Nothing Yet, the EP marked the beginning of a band who finally knew who they were and where they were going. The eerily beautiful pop song “Collection” became a new favorite and is still featured on gigs from time to time. In September that year, the band were invited to the In The City music business convention in Manchester, UK, as one of 54 bands chosen from among the over 5000 that applied, making Flannelmouth the first Finnish act ever to participate in their unsigned band category. Nothing much ever came of it, however, besides the bragging rights.

In 2004 Flannelmouth finally managed to sign a record contract for their first album. Titled Rain Inside, the end-of-December debut was preceded by the seven inch vinyl release of the band’s new favourite “Comeback” along with b-side rocker “Bravado”. Things appeared finally to be looking up for the 10-year-old band. Despite positive reviews, however, the album turned out to be more of a state secret than a household name, and co-operation with the Gridrecords label terminated, leaving the band asking itself some difficult questions about financing the next album.

It took 9 years from the very earliest beginnings of the band in 1995 to their first album. The second album, The Heart Cannot Hold, was faster: only six years passed this time. Released on Helsinki-based Jäänsärkijä label, this one was darker, more refined, again critically acclaimed, and again received precious little attention. Currently the band is writing songs for another album, planned for release in 2013. That would once again be three years faster than the previous album. Does this mean the fourth album will be released immediately after the third? And will the paradoxically time-machine-assisted fifth album actually have already been released three years before? Only time will tell; or actually, come to think of it, time would already have told. Damn, this shit’s tricky.

Hey people, just letting you know we’re very much alive, working on new songs for our third album, to be released some time in 2013. We’re also hoping to play some of our new material live in the autumn of 2012. We’ve found a new drummer called Anssi and we’ve tried a new, more stripped-down approach to our music. More acoustic guitar and simple songs, less layers on top of layers. It’s going to be great, as always.

New York band The Mommyheads will grace our hometown of Helsinki with a gig on March 12.  Your favourite band will join them for this spring’s only gig as we’re currently concentrating on new material and personnel changes in the drum section.

The last of 2010’s gigs now over (and cheers to all who came!), Flannelmouth start work on new songs. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Markus our drummer who after over 15 years of skilled and faithful drumming, drinking, driving, lugging instruments and amplifiers, and fun fooling about has decided to leave the band.

As deserved as a vacation after 15 years might seem, it does leave the band, keener than ever to start work on our third album, in a new and strange situation. Whether this will reflect on the music to come remains to be heard. In the meantime: drummers, feel free to contact us!

Flannelmouth is back to reality after a wonderful tour with Pete Molinari. Lots of memorable moments during the four days. First gig’s excitement, weird crowd in Turku, davidlynchesque feeling to Porvoo gig, midnight burgerfest after Porvoo gig, too much brandy, awesome sounds in Tampere, medievalesque sauna in Telakka venue, black sausage in Tampere, great swedes in Pete’s band and new Flannelmobile.

The tour was success and it was certainly good promotion for Molinari and also for Flannelmouth. People really liked what they saw in all the Finnish venues on this tour.
We would like to thank and praise the following people for their efforts on this tour: Pete Molinari, Paul Buck, Wesley Harvey, Gary Levermore, Tom Hakava, Zachris Sundell, Ossian Marttala, Mikko Hultman, Sebastian Salaja, Dj Mustapha Million, Emmi Kantonen, Jore & Bar Kuka, Fredrik Johansson, Jouni Susi, Hannu Rantala, Ikke Ikäläinen, Janne Laurila, Ville Särmä and Tom Pannula.
